Start Point Lighthouse and Transmitting Station: A Nautical Walk To The Lighthouse

Start Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse on the south Devon coast, serving the Start Bay and Slapton areas. This post shares a walk to Start Point and some thoughts inspired by both the lighthouse and the nearby radio transmitting station.

Walking to Start Point

On the 18th of November 2025, Amber and I went for a walk to Start Point Lighthouse. Standing there, it’s easy to imagine older nautical times when ships relied heavily on lighthouses for safe navigation along the coast.

The Transmitting Station and Radio Waves

Also at Start Point is Start Point Transmitting Station, which transmits BBC Radio Five on the medium wave band. Seeing the transmitting equipment alongside the lighthouse made me think about the early days of radio waves and how technology gradually replaced older navigation methods.
