Dartmoor: A Walk To Avon Dam With My Family

Dartmoor is known for its wide open landscapes, but it also contains a number of striking industrial structures. This post shares a family walk to Avon Dam, a dam and reservoir that supplies a large amount of Devon’s tap water.

Walking to Avon Dam

On the 28th of September 2025, my brothers, sisters, and I went for a walk to Avon Dam. The surrounding moorland made the walk feel open and quiet, with long views across Dartmoor.

The Dam and Its Atmosphere

The dam itself has an eerie, slightly creepy industrial feel to it. Sitting within the natural landscape of Dartmoor, it feels very different from the land around it and stands out as a reminder of how the area has been shaped to support modern life.
