Torcross is a small nautical village on the South Devon coast, located between Slapton and Kingsbridge. The village sits directly by the sea, giving it a strong maritime atmosphere that often brings to mind old galleons and the early days of seafaring.

Because of its exposed position on the coastline, Torcross has always been vulnerable to the power of the sea. Over the years, storms have repeatedly damaged parts of the village, especially the seafront road and nearby buildings.

On the 30th of January 2026, my dad and I walked to Torcross to see the damage and repairs that had taken place following recent storms. Walking along the seafront made it clear just how much force the sea can bring, and how difficult it is to protect a village that sits so close to the water.

Seeing the repairs in progress highlighted the ongoing struggle between the village and the sea. Torcross feels like a place that is constantly shaped by the weather, where the power of nature is never far away.
